Low frequency magnetic fields in the workplace

Continuing speculation about a possible link between magnetic field exposure and childhood cancers suggests a precautionary approach should be adopted regarding exposures to pregnant women in the workplace.

Despite the lack of firm scientific evidence, the possibility that exposures to low-frequency magnetic fields at levels far below current recomended exposure limits could be harmful. The adoption of a precautionary approach in the light of this doubt, particulary for pregnant women and by extension women of childbearing age, is entirely reasonable. Very often, the simple and costless expedient of moving a desk a metre or two will reduce magnetic field exposure significantly.
